Welcome to Mark Twain Hotel
The Mark Twain Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Peoria, Illinois, offers travelers an authentic experience steeped in local charm and history. While the hotel itself shows signs of age, evidenced by its vintage lobby and some wear and tear in the rooms and common areas, it carries a warmth and character that modern hotels often lack. Guests appreciate the friendly and professional staff who go above and beyond to make each stay memorable — from accommodating unexpected room changes to thoughtful room upgrades with striking river views.
Rooms at the Mark Twain Hotel vary in condition, reflecting the building’s historic roots. Some guests note older fixtures and occasional quirks like noisy elevators or challenging door mechanisms, yet most find the accommodations clean, comfortable, and equipped with essentials like air conditioning and free Wi-Fi. The beds, while sometimes described as on the firmer side, provide a restful night’s sleep. Unique touches such as sliding barn doors on bathrooms and clever breakfast arrangements—where guests pre-select their meals for a ready-to-go morning bag—add a personal dimension to the stay.
For those visiting Peoria, the hotel’s prime downtown location is a significant benefit. It sits within easy walking distance to the Peoria Riverfront Museum and the Riverplex Recreation and Wellness Center, making it an excellent base for cultural exploration and leisure activities. Ample free parking and a smoke-free environment enhance guest comfort, although the hotel does not offer amenities like a pool or onsite restaurant, which may influence expectations.
Overall, the Mark Twain Hotel appeals to discerning travelers who value genuine hospitality, historical ambiance, and convenience over high-end luxury. While some operational details could benefit from modernization, the warmth of the staff and the hotel's unique character create a memorable and sincere lodging experience. It stands as a testament to Peoria’s rich heritage, welcoming guests with a blend of timeless charm and earnest care.

Pretty old hotel. Lobby looked very authentic but the wear and tear is real. The front desk employees were super nice and friendly and professional, just amazing human beings. The elevators are old and they do make a noise but we did not have problems with them. The back door is kinda tricky and doesn't work all the time. Parking is in the back, behind the hotel but very accessible from all sides and never busy or crowded. It is on a great location where you are close to any big attractions and also the river so the view from the room to the river and bridge was amazing. The room was quite outdated though. The beds are not comfortable so if you have back issues, good luck. The TVs are old and not smart so you are kinda limited and also they don't work if it is raining outside. The isolation is almost non existent since we could hear our neighbors conversation with no problems. There were no pens in the room so we did have trouble selecting our breakfast. They do give you breakfast slips for each day of your stay, you use 1 per day for all of the guests in the room, and they do have many options. Good thing is you can choose 1 item from every category per person so you can get oatmeal, protein bar, sandwich, drink, a side etc. Restroom was ok, had plenty of towels but not enough room so it is inconvenient. In terms of value, I do think it is a little overpriced for the quality they offer but a nice option if there is nothing else available close by.
If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! My fiancé booked a room for New Year's Eve, came in early to check in while I was getting my nails done, and brought flowers, a bear, and my favorite wine. He asked Andrea to put them in our room to surprise me. Not only did she upgrade our room to a newly remodeled room with a beautiful view of the river, but when we got back, she had it set up in the sweetest way! It was definitely a big surprise and even surprised my fiancé with how beautifully she had laid everything out. It was so romantic, I almost cried. We saw her later and she was so excited that we were so happy with everything! She really cares about providing a great experience for her guests. This is our 3rd time here and it's been great every time!
I liked this place. We first were in room 900, but there were birds nesting and cooing at 9 p.m. We didn't want to risk that happening all night. Plus, the room had sloppy patches on the ceiling and wacky blinds (all crooked). We asked to move and we went to room 812, which was nice. We felt comfortable in the room, and I slept as well as I usually do in a hotel (never too great). The room and hallways were quiet. They had made to order omelets, which were really good. Make sure you get one. Also, the guys behind the counter were really nice. The price was good, and I would definitely stay here again.
Buyer Beware: they oversell rooms. I had booked a King room earlier in the evening and was told that none were available on arrival and so had to settle for a smaller room. Also had to change rooms when the really old smoke detector started acting up, but the staff were super friendly and helpful. The rooms were otherwise great and reasonably clean, but the common areas desperately needed vacuuming and carpet cleaning. You wouldn’t want to walk around barefoot. Great location, and a charming hotel despite showing its age.
I had a great experience staying here. The decor was very nice, the staff was amazing, great atmosphere, comfortable beds even if they were a little on the stiffer side, and they had a clever way of offering complimentary breakfast by offering you options the night before and having it ready in a paper bag in the morning with coffee, water and tea available in the lobby. My only complaints were that the showers are too small, there was no channel guide, and the picture quality on the TV was lacking and despite the namesake, they also didn't actually have any mark Twain writings though they did have quite a few of the classics. I would happily stay here again any time I'm visiting the area.
Five stars for the value received. Would more likely go to 4.5 if available, but as I was typing we noticed a missing smoke detector so I bumped down to 4. The room was neat and clean. Bed and pillows were quite comfortable. A/c unit was free from dust and when we used the air, it smelled fine! Some items are dated, but I feel that’s reflected in the price. Carpet is starting to bunch and the tv is small, but it worked just fine. Microwave, mini fridge, coffee and tea in room. Drawers, hanging closet space with hangers and luggage rack available. Our room had exposed brick wall and a few of the bridge/water(over the roof and a few parking lots of course, but we were only on floor two). They were out of many breakfast items, but gave us what they had available. We stayed after a holiday weekend with a 3-day concert in town they’d been fully booked - front desk was quite friendly and said “their truck didn’t come” we’ll give ‘em a pass… We would definitely stay here again when in town.
We very much enjoyed our stay. We were very comfortable. The hotel was very clean, and the young lady at the front desk was very very welcoming and her hospitality was on point although did look forward to being in a brick exposed room as you advertised on Travelocity but unfortunately we did not get a room as such but the bed was very comfortable. The room was nice and the location was in the perfect spot near everything and everyone that we needed and wanted to visit
The studio queen room was nice, but spartan. A bedside table is surely needed. No place to put glasses, phone, water bottle except on top of the bookshelf headboard. Lighting is kinda funky. Either too much or too little. Room was clean and fairly modern (sliding barn door into bathroom with walk-in shower). Fantastic hot breakfast included in the price of the stay! And a very friendly and attentive staff. (When I asked about the complimentary drink per person, in the lounge, was told they stopped doing that in January - this was late September. Website needs some work! And the price of two half-full wine glasses was $21.60! It ain't Chicago!!!) All in all, a good experience for the price.
